Artisanal Fishers of Caldera Inaugurate Hydrocarbon Storage Facility with CMP’s Support
The initiative reinforces CMP’s commitment to sustainable mining and the responsible development of coastal communities.
Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) officially handed over a new facility for the handling and storage of hydrocarbons to the Association of Artisanal Fishers and Divers of Caldera. The project represents a significant step forward in the responsible management of resources and the protection of the marine environment, made possible through the joint efforts of the company and the local artisanal fishing sector.
The new facility will enhance safety and environmental management at the only artisanal fishing shipyard in Caldera and the northern macrozone, helping to reduce pollution from used oils, lower the carbon footprint, and protect the marine ecosystem.
“The construction of this hydrocarbon storage room addresses a concrete need of Caldera’s fishing sector and, at the same time, marks an important step toward protecting our oceans. It reflects a joint effort and a shared commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable community with opportunities for all,” said Matías Cánovas, Superintendent of CMP’s Puerto Punta Totoralillo.
The initiative was developed as part of CMP’s 2023–2026 Artisanal Fishing Collaboration Agreement, under its Environmental Management line of action, reaffirming the mutual commitment to promoting sustainable development in the territory.
“One of our major challenges has been the management of used lubricating oils from boat engines. Thanks to CMP’s support, we now have a facility that will prevent these oils from ending up in the sea or soil, where they could seriously harm the environment,” stated Fabián Salazar, President of the Association of Artisanal Fishers and Divers of Caldera.
Meanwhile, Camilo Cifuentes, Caldera’s Port Captain, noted that,
“This implementation directly benefits the management and oversight of activities in the shipyard, which must meet specific safety and environmental standards. We are grateful for CMP’s support in carrying out this initiative, which benefits the fishing community and all users of this space.”
The facility was designed for the temporary storage of used oils and lubricants, preventing spills and leaks through the use of impermeable flooring and secondary containment systems. It also facilitates collection by authorized waste managers, in compliance with current safety, ventilation, and signage standards.
