Progress is being made on measures to improve environmental management in Guayacán

2 Dec, 2022

Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) is implementing a series of measures to improve the environmental management of the port of Guayacán, as part of the agreements reached with the community to consolidate a sustainable operation in the short and medium term.

The work plan includes the recommendations of Worley, an Australian engineering firm with expertise in ports, which prepared a five-year work plan to contribute to the reduction of particulate matter emissions into the air, derived from the operation of the Port of Guayacán.

The measures include the modernization of the ore stacking system at the port, which includes the replacement of the stacker arm, the encapsulation of the conveyor belts and the encapsulation of the material transfer systems, in order to improve the operational standard of the site.

It should be recalled that in January 2022, the company stopped operations for one month to carry out maintenance and improvement of its facilities, both at Minas El Romeral and at the railway and port. This included the replacement of hoppers and chutes that receive the material, installation of covers on conveyor belts at the port, paving of the mine's interior roads and welding of rails and improvement of the railroad superstructure.

Another relevant measure is the creation of a control and alert protocol for port operations in the event of wind gusts greater than 7.0 m/s. This monitoring allows reinforcing wetting measures in piles/roads and reducing or stopping unloading and transport operations to avoid the dispersion of particulate material. Likewise, the interior roads of the facilities have been paved for the same purpose, which is complemented with air quality and seabed monitoring in La Herradura Bay, studies that have been analyzing the conditions of the sector for more than 20 years.

More present in Guayacán

In recent years, CMP has invested more than US$ 1 million in various social initiatives; squares, street paving, environmental improvements, cultural funds and other contributions. For example, since the end of 2019, a street cleaning program is being implemented that includes manual sweeping, industrial vacuuming, washing of roadways and removal of micro-dumps.

We are also working on mural projects in different parts of the town, initiatives that aim to improve the common spaces of Guayacán's neighbors. We have also worked constantly with artisanal fishermen, focusing collaboration on equipment and productive projects.
