CMP joins Talento Mujer at the most important mining fair in the country
Compañía Minera del Pacífico participates as a sponsor of Talento Mujer at Exponor 2024, focusing its message on inclusion and the relevance of iron ore mining.
On Monday, Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) began its first participation in Exponor, the most important mining fair in the country, which takes place in Antofagasta and is attended the most important national and international companies in the industry, as well as services and the entire cluster and associated logistics chain.
CMP’s participation is framed as a sponsor of Talento Mujer, an initiative aimed at promoting female participation in mining, as well as labor relations, networking and recruitment. The event, organized RedEG and the Antofagasta Industrial Association (AIA), has its own stand and a series of talks and activations for the visiting community.
Inclusion
One of CMP’s motivations for supporting this Talento Mujer proposal is based on the consolidation of the presence of women in the mining industry, where the company is a pioneer in currently having an executive committee made up of a majority of women, and having gone from 3% to 16% of women in its own and collaborating companies’ staff in 3 years, with no salary gaps gender.
In addition, Makarina Orellana Farías, Operations Manager of Compañía Minera del Pacífico, appointed in 2022 as the first woman to lead 9 operations of a Chilean mining group, participated in the seminar “Talent Mining and Value Generation”.
“We have opened leadership spaces for women, discovering and developing their greatest potential. We are one of the companies with the highest percentage of women on its executive committee, a strategic decision that shows us that diverse teams generate value, and our results confirm this,” said CMP’s general manager, Francisco Carvajal.
Different mining
Approximately 14.8 million tons more iron ore is produced than copper in the country. And Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) is Chile’s leading producer of iron ore, which widely differentiates it from copper and lithium. These high-quality products are used worldwide mainly to become steel, fundamental in the construction of buildings, bridges, industrial machinery, vehicles, ships and the global energy infrastructure.
The production of this vital element requires less energy and water resources as it does not require primary production with chemicals added in the process, so associated emissions are low. Compared to 2020, emissions were reduced 40% through process optimization, receiving the Chile Footprint Seal for two consecutive years.
Currently, the company has nine operations in the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo, 1,800 direct workers and 6,000 collaborators, 98% of whom reside in the aforementioned territories. In addition, it has been recognized ASECH as the best payers in the industry for two consecutive years, currently with a process that allows payments in 15 days for small and medium-sized companies.
“We do mining from the territory,” emphasizes Carvajal, “40% of our suppliers are local, 98% of our workforce is local. This makes us grow with our regions and near communities, because we are part of the same ecosystem. Together we are building a different kind of mining”.
