IRONCLAD COMMITMENT

Together with Finning, we promote STEM disciplines in Vallenar and Huasco.

25 Nov, 2022

The event, held on Saturday, August 27 at the Algarrobo sports center in Vallenar, was aimed at promoting, from an early age, skills and knowledge in STEM disciplines, i.e. science, technology, engineering and mathematics, in the hope of developing their cognitive evolution and influencing the vocational decisions of future local female talent.

In addition, workshops on unconscious biases were conducted by Loba Teatro, aimed at the parents of the participating girls, so that they can support them in promoting a life with fewer gender gaps and stereotypes.

In this regard, Daniela Flores, Corporate Communications Manager at Finning South America, explained that "with these initiatives we seek that young women contemplate different alternatives in their future when making vocational decisions and that they are not afraid or lack the skills to opt for careers that have traditionally been chosen by men. In this way, we contribute to giving them the possibility of working in positions that have historically been masculinized.

Francisco Carvajal, general manager of CMP, said: "We continue to consolidate our vision that diversity, in all its forms, is fundamental for growth, not only in our company, but also in everyday life. We must continue to develop the vocational awakening of girls in the Huasco Valley, so that they can pursue careers that were mistakenly thought to be designed for men. Here we are planting a very fruitful seed for each of them, their families, and the territory in general.

From the Universidad Católica del Norte, Pedro Reyes Norambuena, Secretary of Outreach of the UCN School of Engineering, emphasizes that, "through these robotics workshops we can meet future and future students who can be part of these STEM careers, and we are interested -of course- in adding the gender perspective, in students who are just beginning to learn about this line of development".

Finning has been advancing for several years in its commitment to increase the participation of female talent in masculinized roles, both within its organization and for the productive industries in general, by working on training plans with a gender focus for technical careers. In the last two years, more than a thousand women in Chile have been trained in skills for technical-mechanical trades, increasing their participation in historically male-dominated positions.

Compañía Minera del Pacífico has also developed a comprehensive transformation process in the last two years, accelerating the incorporation of women in decision-making positions. This is reflected in the fact that currently the company, with presence in the Atacama and Coquimbo regions, has 43% of women in roles within its executive committee, one of the highest figures in the national industry.
